Week 1, Year Word

Energized
That is my 2023 year word. This word came to mind on the very first day of the year. Taking advantage of the warm winter temperature (70F/21C) on Sunday after three sub-freezing days, I felt like the year was off to a good start. So, the next day, I went out again for a photo walk in search of my composition. I confess this photo came up in just about 10 minutes of observation at this skate park here in Austin. There were several people skating, but I chose to follow this guy you see in the photo. He did some pretty amazing things on his skateboard. This particular photo, however, was a winner in my eyes. He did his trick by not going down on the handrail. Instead, he jumped on it and climbed it. To my amazement, I was able to capture him at the very moment he was parallel to the rail.

The editing started and ended in LR. In the middle of the process, I took the image to PS to add the radial mask intensifying the motion and energy already present in his actions.

In your critique, I’d love to hear what you think worked well and what did not. What do you think would make the image better for the “Energized” theme? In advance, I thank you for your comments.

This is my photograph for week 1. This seemed a perfect opportunity to take a photograph I had in mind for a long time. The chess pieces are set up in the position of the classic opening, The Queen's gambit.

Ricky says:

I’m using point of view which is not one word, so that could be perspective instead. I would like to see things through different eyes, see things and think about them differently. I want to embrace the ideas of others. And see things in a different light. This is the ceiling of my great room at home. It is illuminated by the lights of the Christmas tree and other decorative lights that we have during the season, which changes the color from what we feel should be normal. There is minimal editing on this. I also chose to use looking up as this perspective because I want to keep looking up.
